If you combined them, you'd get 11 kinds of people: those who can count in binary and those who don't.

Unfortunately, our level in this forum does not equate to our level of Math in real life.

Can we say that Mike Spiked our Math-education?

I guessed that Level 1=Freshman Math Major, 2=Sophomore (or Associate degree), and 3=Junior (Major) or Math Minor, and 4=Senior/BA in Math.

So what about a B.Sc. in maths that took three years? Is that 3 or 4?

That would be level 4. Level 4 is either a senior math major, or a BA in math. We can probably assume that a BA and BS are about the same (at my institution, the only difference is that BAs have to take a foreign language, while BSes have to take two semesters of computer science).

In other news:
BS = bullsh*t
MS = more sh*t
PhD = piled higher and deeper

Oh, actually now I see how the four levels could be applied, and it makes sense that I'd be 4: 1=first year, 2=second year, 3=third year, 4=all done, suckers!

Actually, I did about pi years worth of study, since I did one postgrad course for fun afterwards, which is about an eighth of the usual workload for a year.

Probably more like a fourth or sixth of a year's workload---most graduate students only take two or three classes per semester. For instance, I am taking a full load this semester with only two classes, and the three classes that I am planning on taking next semester will probably kill me. Of course, I am teaching as well, and the prep is new this semester, but will be the same in the Fall, so maybe I will survive. ;)

I ended up dropping that course after I found out how much the prof sucked and most of the class bombed her midterm :lol:

I'm more of a discrete type of guy.

This reminds me of the definition for the discrete cardinals: it's those cardinals who don't give their phone number even to the Pope!

I picked High School level since it is the type of school I attend. My knowledge does however qualify at the level of first year of university, if I am to believe the counselor I spoke to about the matter. So that's good.

well, i'm 15 years old and studying math full time in the university.
this poll made me feel so stupid TT
o well, i guess most of the people over here are about my level, so it's cool :P
There was an open question which i have asked many proffesors and fellow mathematicians, but none were able to answer:

Is there a function f:R->R (not necessarily continuous on ALL of R) which:
for every linear function g(x)=m*x+n, there is a number X for which g is the tangent of f in? (for each x g(x)=f(X)+f'(X)(x-X))
i think not.

(i almost solved it - using a small set theory tweak and a big topology tweak)

Having studied a great deal of mathematics does not make one smart, and not having studied a great deal of mathematics does not make one stupid. I know several people with Ph.D.s in mathematics who are morons, and many other folk who barely got through algebra who are otherwise brilliant. If you are 15 and studying mathematics at the university level, it is probably safe to say that you are above average. Don't let it go to your head. :P

45.1346134623% of statistics display an unjustified level of precision, 82% of statistics are made up on the spot, and 116% of people do not understand statistics.
