Genetic Information do you hold?

Postby theboss » Fri Feb 11, 2011 4:44 pm

Here's a random thing i'd like to try, I made this genetic info calculator some time ago. That calculates the amount of data that the total of all your cells hold. (yea, I know that most of it is duplicate)
I used these facts:
Code: Select all
One base pair(AT, CG, TA or GC) holds 2 bits.
A diploid cell has 6 billion base pairs.
Every cell has 1.4 Gb of genetic information.
The amount of cells in the human body is debated to be either 10, 50 or 100 trillion. We took the average of 53.33 Trillion.
The weight of a human cell is 10E-11 Kg.

So how much data do you posses?

to bad it's filled with copies of a 1.4Gb file :D
and don't forget the 5 petabytes of brain storage :D
Q.E.D. , or not?

Thats for reference, as most people don't really get an idea when they hear exabytes. xD

Also I'm not sure if thats actually already in there.
Probably not because our brain doesn't store stuff in DNA, but ofc not all of our mass is cells, so I think that this value is rounded up anyway.

Do you take into account the bacterial cultures in each human being, and the genetic material in all those cells?

Each one would be less than a human cell, but there are more bacteria in a person than human cells.
